Press Release

September 26, 2007

Matt our ever faithful PRO has outdone himself this time, by getting out this Press Release even faster than the official Barking & Dagenham Press Release!

Last week Joe, the faithful Secretary Thurrock Plus Group (formerly Thurrock 18 Plus Group), went on a charity sponsored walk around Brentwood and Shenfield in aid of Hopefield Animal Sanctuary, while other members of the group were in a nice cosy cinema. The route went via two pubs, though apparently Joe swears only one was open, followed by a visit to the sanctuary itself. Joe is still counting the money raised for the Sanctuary, as are the organisers from Barking and Dagenham Plus, the total is expected to be several hundred pounds. Joe said “I would like to thank all fellow club members who sponsored me, even the one who sponsored the £1.29p!”

This coming weekend Thurrock members will be visiting their friends at Barking and Dagenham Plus for a live band night to celebrate the clubs 30th anniversary. Upcoming events in the East Anglia Area and nationally will be the National Holiday in Turkey, the National Pool competition and activity holiday in Yorkshire (called NEAT) and the national live entertainment weekend in Hunstanton (WASH).

Thurrock Plus is a lively and friendly sports and social organisation for people in the 18 to 35 age range; it is run completely by its members and offers a wide-ranging programme of regular events, often in conjunction with other groups in East Anglia Area. New members are always welcome. Anyone who is interested can contact

Hopefield Animal Sanctuary

September 22, 2007

Out with Barking & Dagenham Plus today, on a sponsored walk around Brentwood and Shenfield in aid of Hopefield Animal Sanctuary. Our route was nine miles long, and took us past at least two pubs, only one of which was open! We then went walked to the Sanctuary itself – which is not far from Brentwood town centre – and saw all the animals, which included horses, donkeys, goats, dogs, cats, pigs, geese and sheep. There were also some cows there – I wonder if they were offended when I walked up to them wearing a leather jacket???

I took enough clips that day that I shall probably make a video of the event and post it on YouTube.

In the evening I was out to see East of Java again, this time at The Bridge in Upminster.

Press Release

September 14, 2007

It’s that time of year again when Matt our faithful PRO produces another Press Release. Unusually for Matt, this one is almost completely accurate (nb: almost being the operative word).

Last month was a busy one for members of Thurrock Plus Group (formerly Thurrock 18 Plus Group). Some went to “V 2007” while others enjoyed a surfing holiday in Cornwall and Club Secretary Joe took part in the National Tennis tournament, upholding the honour of Thurrock Plus by not finishing in last place as he put it himself! For evening entertainment some members joined the members of other groups in the East Anglia Area in watching live band East of Java in Ilford. Some of Thurrock’s friends in other groups went to the Multi Activity weekend in Milton Keynes, doing things such as indoor sky-diving, rock climbing and paintball –among others.

Anyone who is interested can contact…

Stevenage Disco

September 8, 2007

Saturday, and to London Colney in Hertfordshire to experience the Stevenage Disco. This was held at the Golden Lion Pub, and perennial PLUS favourite Mark Hawkins was the DJ. There were lots of people there: from Barking & Dagenham, Kings Lynn, Redbridge, Romford, Thurrock (i.e. including Your Humble Blogmaster), Midland Area, and North Thames & Chiltern Area (obviously).

Hallowe’en

July 15, 2007

‘Twas a day marked by strange omens: the postal strike … the swipe card system in our office breaking down … Duncan’s horses turning and eating themselves etc etc etc. However, on this particular Friday 13th, your humble blogmaster escaped and travelled to Tottenhill, near Kings Lynn, for the Kings Lynn Midsummer Hallowe’en Disco.

Leaving aside the rather obvious observation that Hallowe’en refers specifically to the pagan day-of-the-dead festival of Samhain on October 31st, this was the weekend of Kings Lynn Plus’ annual Disco and camp-over. It was also the weekend of the National Rounders, which was being organised in Kings Lynn to coincide with it. There were members of:

  • Barking & Dagenham
  • Bishops Stortford
  • Brentwood
  • Chelmsford
  • Coventry
  • Dunstable
  • Havering
  • Hillingdon
  • Leamington Spa
  • Lichfield
  • Lincs Quest
  • Redbridge
  • Romford
  • Solihull
  • Sutton Colefield;

as well as Kings Lynn themselves, and yours truly from Thurrock. There were about 50 people there, which is apparently more than last year.

On Friday evening there was Karaoke, provided by Adam Redshaw of the Express Roadshow, as well as Hallowe’en party games. I came second in a game of Twister!

On Saturday there was a trip to one of Thurrock Plus’ perennially favourite businesses, Beers of Europe. Kings Lynn Plus had negotiated for us a 10% discount on what we spent there.

Here are my tasting notes:

  • Desperados – a old favourite of mine, a 6% French beer flavoured with Tequila and Lime. Very good.
  • Kriska – from the makers of Desperados, a so-called Vodka-flavoured beer. Given that Vodka doesn’t actually have much of a flavour of its own, I was intrigued by the description. In actual fact it turned out to taste something like a “White Beer”.
  • Golden Ginseng – does exactly what it says on the tin, i.e. a 3.6% beer said to have added Ginseng. Actually, I could not taste any Ginseng, and did not particulary notice any effect the addtion of this herb might have had, so it really tasted like an unremarkable beer.

In the afternoon was the National Rounders, organised by East Anglia Area generally, and run by me on the day itself. This was won by a scratch-team entitled “Golden Balls”.

Thence back to the campsite for a Barbecue, and a Hallowe’en themed fancy dress disco in the evening: I came as a Werewolf. I had the honour of presenting Kings Lynn Plus with the President’s Trophy for Best Group in the Federation (I took off my Werewolf mask first, though!). They had won it at the National AGM in February, but it was only until now that they were able to get hold of the actual Trophy from the previous winner.

The National Treasure Hunt

July 7, 2007

7/7/7, and your humble blogmaster went up to London to take part in the National Treasure Hunt. Over 50 Plussers from all over England came and took part. I was in a team of Plussers from East Anglia Area – and we came first! Here is a video compiled from footage I took that day:

Afterwards we headed back to the Cauliflower, to catch the last part of East of Java‘s set.

Day Trip To Brighton

June 16, 2007

Saturday saw members of Thurrock join with B&D Plus to go down to Eastbourne and Brighton. This was originally meant to be as part of the Lavender Line: however, we were informed that the train in question was unavailable, due to an exploding cooker. So instead we just went on a day trip by coach to the South coast.

Your Humble Blogmaster was responsible for the superior quality of CDs that were played on the coach. After all, I soon discovered that if there weren’t any decent CDs available, the only alternative would have to be Black Lace’s Greatest Hits

We had a good time once we got there. The only real problem is that we had to leave Brighton just as the evening was getting started, in order to get home at a reasonable hour.

The Lavender Line itself will be re-scheduled for later this year.

Southend Airshow

May 28, 2007

On Monday we braved the weather to watch the Southend Airshow. Yours truly was no fool: rather than try to walk along the sea-front itself, I led our band of gallant Plussers to the nearest place which was (a) warm, (b) dry, (c) from which the Airshow could be seen and (d) served alcohol. This turned out to be the Esplanade Pub.

I managed to record a few clips on my cameraphone, and made a video for YouTube out of it. LisaNova or Smosh it is not, but I hope you like it.

National Paintball

May 26, 2007

Saturday, and to Mayhem Paintball in Abridge, Essex, for the National Paintball. This is the largest Paintball site in England, and is very near to Theydon Bois (they do regular Mini-bus pickups from the station).

Your humble blogmaster took part with other Plussers in a group of 30 in eight games throughout the day. We played on 4 of the 14 playing areas – two games each. It was a draw at the end of the day so far as I can remember.

Not that the score is what I remember most about the day! I certainly “killed” a few of the opposing team, but I got plugged several times myself. Mainly it was just once here or there, but in the last game of the day, I mistakingly ran straight across someone’s line of fire, resulting in several shots all at once. Although they stung at the time, the bruises now look a lot worse than they actually feel.

In the evening we went to the Sir Winston Churchill Pub in nearby Debden for a disco.
