Dave Sands presents the trophy for the Inter-Group Scattergories Championship

To the White Horse in Chadwell Heath last night for Barking & Dagenham Plus’ club-night. There we hosted the first “Inter-group Scattergories Challenge” – which, I am delighted to say, was won by members of B&D Plus!!! The event was organised and run by Dave Sands, our Activities Officer.

This weekend is the National Badminton Championship, in Maidenhead, Berks, whilst the following weekend is the Barnet Disco, which is being held in the Golden Lion, London Colney.

Area Quiz

The Rat Pack at the Area Quiz, 26/2/2011

Saturday, and to Trinity Church Hall, Barkingside to take part in the the annual Anglia & South East Area Quiz. We entered under the team name “The Rat Pack,” in honour of our Club President. In addition to Plussers from all over the Area, we had some guests in the form of a team from Barnet, in North Thames & Chiltern Area.

Needless to say, we won! Our prize was to each walk away with a nice ripe lemon to take home. The losing team however had to make do with nothing more than a large tin of chocolates.

Yes / No

A Plusser attending the Food Safety Qualification

Last night we were all down the White Horse Inn, where the event of the evening was “Yes / No” hosted by Paul Scott.

Gemma, fresh back from Wellingborough at the weekend, regaled us with all the gory details of what happened at the National AGM. Plus is not just about wild parties: it also does useful stuff which will look good if you mention on your CV. For example: former National Training Officer Francis Wallington (HLM) is putting on a Food Safety Qualification course on March 26th. In a special offer for members of this Area, anyone who can actually get to the course (which is in Staffordshire) will be allowed to participate for free. Gemma herself intends to go: Francis reported that at the National AGM there was an upsurge of bookings for his course. It looks as if it will be well attended by Plussers from all over the country (see picture).

This Saturday (26th February) we have a fun night out nearer to home – the annual Anglia & South East Area Quiz, which is being held at Holy Trinity Church Hall in Barkingside. Time is 7.30 for 7.45pm prompt start. Cost is £8 which includes food.  Members who are interested please contact us so we can arrange food orders in advance (fish / chicken / vegetarian). Also, regarding drinks it is BYO.

PLUS goes Platinum (Press Release)

February 21, 2011

Celebrations were in the air this weekend as members of Barking & Dagenham Plus joined with their counterparts from across the country in Wellingborough, Northants. The occasion: to mark the Platinum (70th) Anniversary of PLUS – formerly known as “Eighteen Plus.”

The Saturday evening was dominated by a magnificent party at the Hind Hotel, featuring live entertainment from former X-Factor contestants “Two 2 Go.” Earlier in the day PLUS had also held its National AGM at the same venue.

Barking & Dagenham Plus’ chair, Gemma Crader, 21, said:

“Eighteen Plus was founded as a social organisation for young adults, and we’re still going strong after seventy years! I had a great time meeting up with friends from all over England. I’m also looking forward to more events like this throughout the rest of the year.”

Barking & Dagenham Plus meets every Tuesday evening at the White Horse Inn in Chadwell Heath. New membership enquiries are always welcome. For more information please phone Joe on 07958 669339, or visit our website: http://www.barkingdagenhamplus.com

Five Top Tips To Improve Your Social Life (Please RT)

February 17, 2011
  1. Google any of the following terms:
    • PLUS
    • Eighteen Plus OR 18 Plus
    • National Federation of Plus Areas

This will enable you to find details of the nearest PLUS group, which all cater for young adults aged 18 to 35. Plus operates nationally throughout England, though not in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland … yet.

  2. Interested but don’t live near a PLUS group? We organise and take part in events all over the country and even abroad, not just in the area local to any given PLUS group. Hence there is likely to be one or more Plus event which is relatively near you all the same. Why not get in touch with a Plus group and enquire about distance-membership? Barking & Dagenham Plus can be contacted via our Contact Page.
  3. Don’t live near a PLUS group but still like the idea of coming along to group-nights? WHY NOT APPLY TO FOUND YOUR OWN PLUS GROUP? The advantages of being the founder of your own Plus group are:
    • You will receive support in terms of advice and publicity. You can even apply to have the local Area pay for Publicity which you yourself carry out.
    • You will be able to use the PLUS name when it comes to advertising.
    • PLUS will keep you up to date with details of events which are put on exclusively for Plus-members.
    • PLUS will arrange for any Potential New Members who live nearby to contact you.
    • If you organise your own events you will be covered by PLUS’ Public Indemnity Insurance.

In order to affiliate to PLUS you will need to do the following:

    • Each year, you should send your local Plus Area £25 for each enrolled member your group has, including yourself.
    • One or more representatives of your group should come to the Area Conferences, which take place four times a year in a central location.
    • There are a few T&Cs which will be outlined to you, but these are not particularly burdensome.

To get started with your own PLUS group, contact your local Plus Area. If you happen to live in Sussex, Surrey, Kent, Essex, East London, East Hertfordshire, Suffolk, Norfolk or Cambridgeshire, you can contact Joe Gurney who is the Administrator of Anglia & South-East Area Plus.

  4. Do any of the following apply to you?
    • You are a professional musician – you and your band are in search of new gigs.
    • You are some other kind of entertainer – e.g. stand-up comedian, etc – again searching for new gigs.
    • You represent a charity or worthy cause.
    • You have a product or service which will appeal to 18- to 35-year olds.
    • You are journalist – print, radio, television, etc – and you want to find out what matters to 18 to 35 year olds.
  5. If so, PLUS wants to hear from you! Even if you don’t actually want to join PLUS as a member, nevertheless PLUS will be of benefit to you because it is likely we will want to make use of your services. PLUS often hires musicians, entertainers, DJs etc for the many social events that it puts on. Plussers also often raise money for charity and help out with causes which are important to the local community. Plus groups are always interested in people who will run events for them, or who will volunteer to visit as a guest speaker. And because PLUS is ultimately a nationwide organisation, there is potentially a ready-made audience for you.

  6. Finally, it is worth keeping up to date with the calendar of events run by PLUS, as a small number of these are put on for the general public – especially those which are designated “NEW MEMBER NIGHTS.” Although the vast majority are for Plus members, New Member Nights are an excellent way to meet Plussers and decide whether this is for you.

Getting Active with Barking & Dagenham Plus (Press Release)

February 7, 2011

Barking & Dagenham Plus, the social group for young adults, today revealed its programme of activities for the forthcoming six months. These include regional sporting events such as Tennis and Badminton tournaments, a weekend break to Brean Sands in Somerset, and a number of events to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the National Federation of Plus Areas, including a 1940s-themed Summer Ball.

Looking ahead to later in the year, the group will also be undertaking its annual sponsored walk, which this year will be in aid of Haven House. Barking & Dagenham’s chairwoman Gemma Crader, 21, said:

“In addition to having fun, we always support local charities. For example last year we raised money for Richard House, and I had the honour of presenting them with a cheque for £450. In the past we have supported other causes such as Macmillan Nurses and Hopefield Animal Sanctuary in Brentwood. We decide our chosen charity from suggestions made by our members.”

A Different Kind of Social Group (Press Release)

February 1, 2011

Young adults in the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham looking for an active and exciting social will be intrigued to learn about a different kind of social group: PLUS. Plus is a part of a national network of similar groups who organise social events for their members – from simple nights out, to weekends away, and even holidays abroad. However there is one major twist: all events are organised by the members themselves.

Barking & Dagenham Plus’ chairwoman, Miss Gemma Crader, 21, said:

“I first joined for the partying and so I could meet new friends here and from all over the country. What I discovered was this great bunch of people who organise professional quality events – and they’re able to do so because of all the support that the organisation gives us. Plus has done wonders for both my social life and my self-confidence.”

The local branch of PLUS meets every Tuesday evening in the function room of the White Horse, High Road, Chadwell Heath, from 9pm. We are always interested in new membership enquiries. For more details, please phone Joe on 07958 669339, or visit our website: barkingdagenhamplus.wordpress.com
