Cue Action!

January 17, 2012

Barking & Dagenham Plus members took part in the Anglia & South East Area Plus Pool Tournament this Sunday, held at Namco Funscape in Romford. This is an annual event which always draws a large crowd of young men and women from all over East Anglia, Essex, east London, Kent, Surrey and Sussex. Steve Poysden of Redbridge eventually won the tournament, whilst Sanya Preston was the highest placed member of Barking & Dagenham, getting as far as the semi-finals.

Barking & Dagenham Plus’ chair, Miss Gemma Crader, 22, said:

“I love events like this! It is great to be able to come out and have fun and meet so many friends from across the area – and sometimes from across the country as well. Plus often organises sporting tournaments like this as well as sporting events, so there is always something for everyone.”

They Call It Stormy Monday, But Tuesday’s Just As Bad

Happy New Year to you all. If you look out the window you will notice that Britain is having some rather severe weather. Consequently, Barking & Dagenham Plus will not be meeting this evening (Tuesday 3rd January 2012).

However we expect to be meeting as usual at our usual venue and usual time next Tuesday (10th January 2012). Obviously if the severe weather continues we will make another announcement nearer the time.

2011 in review

January 1, 2012

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2011 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A San Francisco cable car holds 60 people. This blog was viewed about 2,000 times in 2011. If it were a cable car, it would take about 33 trips to carry that many people.

Xmas Meal

December 10, 2011

Just three of the Plussers who turned up for our Xmas meal

This afternoon we went to the White Horse in Chadwell Heath for our Xmas meal. The pub was full of punters in festive mood, whilst all the old favourites were playing music-wise: Pogues & Kirsty Maccoll, In Dulci Jubilo by Mike Oldfield, etc etc. Basically any song with sleighbells on it!

On Tuesday Gemma, our esteemed chair, will be running the evening. The following Tuesday is a Christmas Social, whilst the Tuesday after that we are closed due to the Bank Holiday.

Haven House

November 23, 2011

Members of Barking & Dagenham Plus with Charlotte Terry from Haven House.

Tuesday evening a representative of local children’s hospice Haven House came to visit us on our club-night. Miss Charlotte Terry explained in detail the work of the hospice, and the range and level of care that they provide for children from 0 to 19. She then accepted a cheque for £230, which the club had raised via its successful Darts tournament earlier in the year.

Haven House put on a number of charitable fund-raising events throughout the year, including The Only Way is Bollywood this Saturday (26th November).

Barking & Dagenham Plus will continue to support Haven House throughout 2012, and intend to go on a charity walk on Saturday 22nd September 2012.

Other charities which Barking & Dagenham Plus have supported in the past include:

As well as others.

Bowling and Guitar Hero!

November 20, 2011

Talk about a rose amongst thorns!

Today Barking & Dagenham took part in the Anglia & South East Area Ten Pin Bowling Tournament. This took place at the Dagenham Bowl, on Goresbrook Road. The winners were a joint team from Havering & Romford Plus and West Sussex Plus.

In addition, the winner of the Anglia & South East Area Guitar Hero competition was none other than Your Humble Blogmaster! I have the photographic evidence to prove it.

I rock!

From Paul Catterwell, WASH 2011 Bookings officer.

Hi all

Only 9 days to go to WASH!!!!

I was at our group night last night and we have 5 new members who have never been to WASH before and are soooooo excited.  I must admit it gave us ‘oldies’ a real buzz to know that there is still excitement surrounding WASH.

I had an email earlier today from a well respected female member of Plus saying that there are still some who may want to come given the right ‘persuasion’

Well here it is:

Last year we had 185 people who had an absolute blast
Cheaper than 2 years ago at Searles!
Venue and bar open all day
Different beers, lagers and cocktails (and the return of vodka jellies)
3 completely different acts over the weekend
INCLUDING A GROUP YOU WILL HAVE HEARD OF
2 sessions of kareoke
Comedy
Revamped quiz (with 6 chances to win)
Half board for only £20.00
Legendary caravan parties
Revamped venue
All who want can have Gold or Silver caravans (so proper heating this year!)
Clean caravans (as the housekeeper has been sacked from last year)
First ever WASH Boat Race

Its not too late to book, if its just you or more, just let either your Booking Officer or us know and we will sort you out.  We will take cheques on the day as its so late now and promise to sort you out some nice accommodation!

COME AND JOIN THE PARTY!!!

Hama Horror!

October 26, 2011

Last night was a vaguely Halloween themed craft night at club. I say “vaguely” because the only horrific thing about it was the awful pun in the title. Hama Beads are little multi-coloured plastic beads which can be arranged in pretty patterns. When a hot iron is applied to them, they melt together. Here are some examples we made.

Hama horror!

Hama horror!

Won’t leave me alone

In other news, next Tuesday (1st November) will be Gemma’s Disney Quiz. Also, we are already taking bookings for our Christmas meal, which will be on Saturday 10th December at the White Horse at 3pm. Total cost is £14.95 per person: we need £5 deposit ASAP, and the balance by Tuesday 29th November.

Chiswick Halloween Disco

October 17, 2011

The venue for the North Thames & Chiltern Halloween Disco (being run by Chiswick Plus) is now confirmed as the Golden Lion, London Colney. From 8pm onwards, tickets £6 with membership card.

If you want to attend WASH, the national Plus holiday in Hunstanton, it may just still be possible to book so long as you bring the full balance to club ASAP (£66.95 for a “Gold/Silver” caravan place).

We are planning our Christmas Meal at our venue itself, the White Horse in Chadwell Heath, on Saturday 10th December 2011. Cost to be £14.95 per person. Please contact us via this web page or at the club-night if you are interested in going as we need to know numbers.
