Press Release (Multi Activity Weekend)

August 31, 2004

Last weekend saw members of Thurrock 18 Plus Group take part in the East Anglia Area Multi-Activity Day, together with members from other 18 Plus groups from around the country. Among the activities were: windsurfing, kayaking, archery, rifle shooting, rock climbing and “VERTEX” (which involved doing various stunts while harnessed to ropes several meters above the ground).

A disco, quiz and barbecue were organised for the evenings on this two-day event and there was also an optional assault course and paintball. The event organiser, Mr Barry Healey, was pleased to announce that the event was a resounding success and would continue as an annual fixture in the 18Plus calendar.

Upcoming events in the East Anglia Area will be the Essex Air Ambulance charity quiz and the Area’s own quiz, orienteering and the annual live entertainment holiday weekend in Hunstanton.

Thurrock 18 Plus is a lively and friendly sports and social organisation for people in the 18 to 35 age range, it is run completely by its members and offers a wide-ranging programme of regular events, often in conjunction with other groups in East Anglia Area. New members are always welcome. Anyone who is interested can contact…

Press Release (National Gliding / Splatterday)

August 1, 2004

(Sent to the Thurrock Gazette)

The last 2 weekends saw members of Thurrock 18 Plus Group take part in the “Area Splatter Day” and the “National Gliding Day”, together with members from other 18 Plus groups in the East Anglia Area and around the country. Members threw custard pies at each other for charity during the Splatter Day and had a BBQ afterwards.

The “National Gliding Day” saw some members conquer their fear of flying or do a Tom Cruise in “Top Gun” impression when they were winched into the sky at an airfield in Oxfordshire. The organiser of both events, Mr Brian Taylor of 18 Plus said “we had two fantastic days for the members and raised money for local charities in the process, these events have not been run before but have proved popular and could now be run on a regular basis”.

One upcoming event will be the Area Multi Activity Weekend, involving water sports, shooting and climbing among other things. Thurrock 18 Plus is a lively and friendly sports and social organisation for people in the 18 to 35 age range, it is run completely by its members and offers a wide-ranging programme of regular events, often in conjunction with other groups in East Anglia Area. B & D

June 16, 2004

Tuesday: and to the Cherry Tree Pub in Becontree, to visit Barking & Dagenham 18 Plus. Nice large venue, shame there is no direct bus-route from Dagenham Heathway station, as I learned to my cost!

B & D are the largest group in EAA. They run loads of great events, many of which they have to organise months or even up to a year in advance, because they are catering to such a large turnout.

For example, this weekend they are holding a River cruise. They have also started taking bookings for their “Lavender Line” jaunt in Suffolk, for Spring 2005!

Their club-night attracted, in addition to a good number of B & Ders, people from Romford, Redbridge (as well as Thurrock).

Funnily though, they are quite unlike Thurrock, in that not only do they start early – 8.30 as opposed to 9pm – they also get away early at 10.30pm! Do they not know about “last orders”???

New Club Set Up (Press Release)

April 13, 1990

Dusted out from the archives, here are a number of press releases which date back to when Thurrock 18 Plus was still a new club. They were all written by Gary Dunnings, former PRO of both Thurrock and Barking & Dagenham. Thanks to Iain Parkes for digging them out.

If the thought of spending another boring night in the pub is enough to drive you to despair, and you are aged between 18 and 30, then a new club about to be launched in Grays may be just what you are looking for.

Making the most of your free-time can be more difficult in your twenties than as a teenager as friends go to college, move away to new jobs or marry.

But if you are not into a specific sport or past-time and want to meet people it can be difficult to know where to go.

Now, 18 Plus, a national organisation, intend to open a branch in Grays where young people can meet.

It is a non-commercial independent organisation which has no ties with any company, brewery, or religious or political body.

Members can take part in a range of activities ranging from parties to sport, theatre trips to fun-packed weekends away.

Development Chairman Kim Smith said “Prices are kept to a minimum. The emphasis is on providing a packed value for money calendar.

“Don’t be put off by the name if you are nearer 30 than 18. All ages in the range are covered and age doesn’t mattter that much anyway.”

Adding Up to A Fun Time (Press Release)

April 6, 1990

Dusted out from the archives, here are a number of press releases which date back to when Thurrock 18 Plus was still a new club. They were all written by Gary Dunnings, former PRO of both Thurrock and Barking & Dagenham. Thanks to Iain Parkes for digging them out.

If you’re aged 18 to 30 and fed up with the usual round of pubs and nightspots, then a new club being launched in Grays could be what you’re looking for. Eighteen Plus, a national organisation, says its Thurrock branch will offer a lively and varied boost to members’ social lives.

The programme includes everything from parties to sports and theatre trips to weekend breaks.

Eighteen Plus is rare, being one of the few organisations of its type to be non-commercial and independent.

“In this way, prices are kept to a minimum,” says the Thurrock branch’s development chairman, Kim Smith.

Sport

“If you happen to be a fanatic in some sport or pastime, it’s not difficult to join a club specialising in that sort of thing. But if you just want to meet people and enjoy their company, it can be difficult to know where to look.

“Eighteen Plus aims to provide an answer, providing an enormous variety of activities as well.”

Thurrock 18 Plus opens at 8pm on Friday, May 4, at Grays Adult Education Centre in Bridge Road. It will continue there every Friday from 8pm to 10pm.

An invitation is extended to anyone aged 18 to 30. The first night is free.
